When God Feels Silent: Trusting Through the Stillness

trusting god when he feels silent

Have you been in a desert season with the Lord?

Have you ever cried out to God only to be met with silence?

You read your Bible. You pray. You wait. But nothing seems to change. The heavens feel quiet. And in the silence, doubt creeps in. You wonder: Did God hear me? Has He forgotten me? Am I doing something wrong?

If you've been there, you're not alone. Many of the great figures in Scripture faced seasons when God seemed distant. David, a man after God’s own heart, wrote, “How long, Lord? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me?” (Psalm 13:1)

God’s silence isn’t a sign of His absence. Often, it’s a sacred invitation to deeper trust.

What Might God Be Doing in the Silence?

Sometimes, God is stretching your faith, teaching you to trust Him beyond what you can feel or see. Other times, He’s working behind the scenes, aligning circumstances, people, and timing in ways you can’t yet understand. When God is silent, it just means we have work to do.

Think of a seed buried in the soil. There's no visible growth for a while, but under the surface, life is stirring. Roots are forming. Foundations are strengthening.

God is often doing His deepest work in the dark.

Jesus Understands the Silence Too

Even Jesus cried out from the cross, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” (Matthew 27:46). In that moment, He too experienced the weight of silence. But God's plan was still unfolding—one that would lead to resurrection.

If silence was not a sign of abandonment for Christ, then it isn’t for you either.

✨ Reflective Prompts

Take a few moments with these questions. Journal honestly. Pray slowly.

  1. What does God’s silence stir in me—fear, doubt, anger, or something else? What might those emotions be revealing about my expectations of Him?

  2. Have I unknowingly equated God’s presence with constant activity or emotional reassurance? What if He is forming something deeper in the stillness?

  3. When have I experienced spiritual growth after a season of silence or waiting? What did that time ultimately teach me about God’s character—or my own?

  4. Am I willing to remain in a place of not knowing, trusting that God’s timing and wisdom exceed my own?

  5. What small act of faithfulness or surrender can I offer God today—not to earn His voice, but simply to be near Him, even in the quiet?

A Simple Prayer

Lord, even when I don’t hear You, I choose to trust You. Strengthen my faith in the silence. Remind me that You are near, even when I can’t feel You. Help me to walk not by sight, but by faith. Amen.
