December Devotional: The God Who Holds Our Thoughts
Scripture: “You hem me in, behind and before, and you lay your hand upon me.” — Psalm 139:5
December often feels like the year’s closing chapter—a time when unfinished goals or hidden struggles weigh heavily on our minds. For many, the quiet moments bring racing thoughts: “Have I done enough? Why do I still feel anxious? What if I’m not where I should be?”
When our minds feel loud or unsettled, it’s easy to believe God is distant from our inner struggles. Yet Psalm 139 reminds us that He is intimately acquainted with every thought before it forms. He surrounds us—behind and before—placing His steadying hand upon us. In the midst of mental battles, we are not abandoned to wrestle alone.
God is not intimidated by your thought life.
The worries you replay, the discouragement that feels stuck, the what-ifs that steal sleep—He already knows them. His presence doesn’t waver when your thoughts spiral. Instead, He offers Himself as an anchor: steady, near, compassionate.
Practical Reflection:
When your thoughts feel overwhelming, pause and whisper: “Lord, You are here with me in this moment.” You can even read or pray through the full Psalm 139 out loud.
Journal or pray through one repeating worry, handing it over to Him in writing or in words.
Remember that seeking help—through counseling, community, or trusted friends—is one way God provides His care.
Closing Prayer:
Lord, You see every anxious thought and weary place in me. Thank You for surrounding me with Your presence and holding my mind when I cannot hold it together. Teach me to bring my thoughts captive to Christ and to rest in the truth that I am never alone. Amen.
